Cheryl O’Brien is serving as the 62nd Alice in Dairyland. As Wisconsin’s agricultural ambassador, she is striving to educate audiences
across Wisconsin about the importance of our state’s diverse agriculture industry in our daily lives.
Cheryl grew up in Eastman, on her family's dairy farm and was very active in different agriculture youth programs. She volunteered her
time at the Wisconsin State Fair Moo Booth/House of Moo and in the classroom with dairy promotions. She graduated with honors from
the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in May 2008 with degrees in journalism and mass communications. She has gained experience
in journalism by participating in Panthervision, the Broadcast Club at UW-Milwaukee, and worked as an assignment editor for WISN-
TV/DT in Milwaukee prior to this public relations position.
Cheryl brings a unique perspective to the position with her rural upbringing coupled with school and work experiences in Wisconsin’s
largest metropolitan area.
Alice is a one-year contractual position with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (WDATCP) that
dates back to 1948. Under the direction of the WDATCP Division of Agricultural Development, she travels nearly 40,000 miles

conducts a large number of media interviews with television, radio, and print publications. She develops and delivers speeches for

Kurt VerCauteren, PhD, Research Wildlife Biologist, CWD Project Leader, National Wildlife
Research Center, USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services
Kurt VerCauteren leads research on diseases and damage of deer and elk for the National Wildlife Research Center of USDA APHIS
Wildlife Services. He received his B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln. His current research involves addressing scientific questions that will lead to a better understanding of diseases
and to develop means to manage and control them. Much of his efforts are focused at the interface between free-ranging and captive
cervids. The majority of his studies are designed to be applicable in free-ranging and captive settings.
Topic: "On the Fence: CWD Research at the Interface of Wild and Farmed Cervids"
We at the National Wildlife Research Center of USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services have been addressing research issues associated with
CWD transmission and management at the interface between farmed and wild cervids. We have and continue to work on and around
farmed cervid facilities across the country. The willingness of cervid owners to cooperate with, and participate in, our research has led
to valuable new information. Our efforts have focused on evaluating fenceline issues, detection, decontamination, and spread, among
other things. In this presentation we will share the results of many of these studies.
